Volunteer with Mask Up.

The Mask Up team needs your help. If you live in the Cambridge, MA area please consider helping make masks from home.

A sewing machine is not needed to help us make masks. You can support mask making either by cutting fabric to be sewn into masks or sewing masks yourself.

We want ensure that all of our masks are made in a safe way, so we are taking precautions to prevent potential COVID transmission. Please review our volunteer procedures and guides below before volunteering with Mask Up.

How our masks are made.

We maintain an organized process to make sure masks are made to a safe and high standard.

  1. We source mask materials from our volunteers and through clothing donations. All fabric is washed before being distributed to be cut or sewn. Our masks are made from 100% cotton cloth such as t-shirts and sheets.

  2. Once fabric is cleaned we distribute it to be cut. To make our masks our cotton fabric needs to be cut into the correct dimensions and strings need to be made. Some volunteers will cut fabric to be picked up and brought to be sewn, others will both cut and sew their fabric into masks.

  3. Masks are sewn and washed. Finished masks are then picked up.

  4. Finished masks are collected and cleaned again before being distributed throughout our community.
